Schmerling explains that LawPro.ai was built from firsthand frustration inside a growing PI practice. As his firm scaled, highly trained staff spent most of their time reading medical records instead of handling higher-value responsibilities. “Medical records were killing us,” Schmerling explained. “We kept getting more cases, more records, and it was holding us back from growing. Once we solved that problem, everything changed.” By automating medical chronologies and summaries, Schmerling says his firm redeployed key staff into leadership and client-facing roles, driving measurable growth and improving firm culture. “We grew more than 300% in a couple of years, and I’m less hands-on than I’ve ever been,” he said. “Our people are now spending time talking to clients, not buried in records, and that leads to happier clients, more referrals, and often better case resolutions.” The discussion also highlights how AI can strengthen negotiations and litigation strategy without attempting to “predict” case value, something Schmerling intentionally avoids. “We don’t allow AI to predict settlement values,” Schmerling noted. “What we do instead is help lawyers instantly identify the facts, objective findings, and value drivers they need to advocate effectively.” Beyond efficiency, Schmerling emphasized a broader mindset shift for growth-minded attorneys: letting go of control, trusting teams, and investing in systems that work to support people rather than replace them. “You can’t do everything, and you shouldn’t,” he said. “When you put great people in the right roles and give them better tools, the firm grows faster, and everyone wins.” Regarding appearing on the AGM Attorney Podcast, Schmerling added, “It was an amazing experience being on with Josh.
